Strawberry Red Lipstick ft. Ilia + Lavera
It feels as though spring has kind of arrived in a very British, reserved and enigmatic way. It has been gloriously sunny up in the Lakes recently, but true to form the grey skies and chill in the air have crashed the spring party just to let you know they’re still there and you don’t live in Southern France like you pretend you do when the sun is pouring golden rays of happiness into your soul as you eat your lunch Al Fresco on a green lush park lawn. Not sure what I’m talking about but let’s get on to the exciting lipsticks I want to show you!
Every Girl’s Staple
It can’t get much more classic than the red lip. And I’m a bit ashamed I have never had a true red lipstick until now! Pretty peony pinks and light cherry blossom shades are on my wish list too but decided this time to simply focus on getting the classic red staples in my make-up drawer.
Step 1: The Lipliner
I have watched enough YouTube videos to know that apparently a red lip is not as easy as you might think. I took advice from the YouTubers and hunted down a red lipliner. Behold, the Lavera Soft Lipliner in Red 03: organic, affordable (one of the cheapest at £7.90), carmine-free, awesome natural ingredients, and not too drying on the lips. You get slightly less (1.14g) compared with Inika Lip Liner in Moroccan Rose (1.2g) but the difference shows in the price by £5.60.
Kick Ass Ingredients
Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Oil*, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Maltodextrin, Silica, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil*, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax*, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sinflower) Seed Oil, Ascorbyl Palmitate, [+/-Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carmine (CI 75470), Iron Oxide (CI 77491), Iron Oxide (CI 77492), Iron Oxide (CI 77499), Manganese Violet (CI 77742)]
Step 2: The Red Lipstick
For strawberry red lips without carmine, it can’t get more on point than Ilia Wild Child: perfect bright fiery coral red hue with a slightly glossy finish that lasts for hours. A secret weapon all women should have. Paired with simple neutral tones on the eyes, this is my favourite way to wear – with of course the curly hair for a vintage vibe.
For a more blue toned red, Ilia Strike It Up is the classic crimson. Beautiful and suits any skin tone. Both shades are lovely to apply and unlike some lipsticks (Inika I’m looking at you) they are fairly creamy in texture. I live on the edge and wear straight from the bullet but if you want to be precise a lip brush comes in handy (the Benecos Lip Brush is a great bargain for less than a fiver!)
