DIY Arrowroot and Grapefruit Deodorant

Ok so this is my 4th deodorant recipe… It’s been a bit of a mission! I was very happy with the homemade witch hazel deodorant I was using but I fancied having something else that had an alternate scent (witch hazel has quite a strong scent that is difficult to mask/mix with essential oils). I did have a rather embarrassing moment when someone commented near me one day in a supermarket that something smelled very ‘herby’ like rosemary. It was actually me. There were no herbs around… And I probably used too much juniper, not rosemary. Awks.

Anyway, I read about arrowroot being very effective in simple homemade deodorant, so I decided to base my recipe around this. I also wanted to create something a bit more creamy as opposed to a spray or liquid – as well as something with a less ‘herby’ scent! Thankfully this one smells literally delicious, just like lemon meringue pie or lemon cheese! Love using it and no rash at all as previously experienced with my bicarbonate of soda recipe.

Creamy homemade bicarb-free deodorantThe Recipe

  • 1/2 cup organic arrowroot powder
  • 1/2 cup melted organic cocoa butter
  • 1/4 cup melted organic virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup hemp seed oil
  • 10 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 5 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 5 drops clementine essential oil
  • 3 drops bergamot essential oil

My inspiration came from reading about Meow Meow Tweet Baking Soda Free Deodorant With Grapefruit (an American product which I couldn’t locate from a UK supplier), so I did eyeball the ratios for this recipe.

The Method

Struggle immensely and tear your hands to bits trying to shave out some cocoa butter from it’s big plastic tub. Do a victory dance once you have enough to fill about 1/4 cup. Pop the cocoa butter in a small bowl, and sit this in a large glass bowl filled with freshly boiled water to melt.

Melt the coconut oil using the same method and add to the cocoa butter. Add the hemp seed oil and essential oils a few drops at a time to test the scent. Mix well then add the arrowroot a spoonful at a time. Keep mixing even though it looks like it may be lumpy – they will disappear I promise!

Pour into a glass jar and leave to set for about 1-2 hours. If it sets and you think it may be too solid, simply melt and add more hemp seed oil or jojoba oil. Add more arrowroot to thicken if the texture is too liquid or creamy. The great thing about this deodorant is it is so easy and quick to melt again, to then mix in more of which ingredient you would like to alter the recipe without having to start all over again!

The Application

Super simple, just apply straight after the shower and it should last quite well through the day. It’s also very gentle on sensitive or broken skin – I shave everyday and it doesn’t cause discomfort. It does sting a tiny bit sometimes when applying, but this subsides after a few seconds and then it’s fine for the rest of the day without causing redness or rash. I also carry a mini jar with me in my bag as a back-up 🙂

Hope this is helpful, please let me know any feedback if you try this! I’m always on twitter, so please do tweet me if you have any comments or queries.

  • This sounds and looks amazing! I have so many natural deodorants on the go at the moment haha, but I’m still so tempted to try and whip this up – Lemon Meringue Pie sounds too good not to try x

    • Aw thank you so much! Yes it’s weird because I put more grapefruit oil in than lemongrass but it still somehow smells just like lemon meringue pie 🙂 And me too, I’m constantly making & trying deodorants haha …Let me know if you try it Tania! 😀 x
